Did you just have your hood cleaned?  If so, it may not be grease.  It may be dirty brown water.  If this is the case it isn't altogether uncommon.  What happens?  Hoods are built by countless craftsmen, using a variety of
kitchen exhaust hood models, but there remains only one type of hood cleaning- -a wet one.

Why is my exhaust hood fan squeaking? or making other noises?

Exhaust system fan motorWe normally get service calls after the squeaking has stopped.  That's because whatever was squeaking is now broke and the caller is now facing a bigger problem than an annoying noise.  It is a minor emergency when the kitchen exhaust system completely shuts down.  Noises coming from the hood are almost always generated from the exhaust fan since it is the only mechanical or moving part in the hood system.  Typical noises are squeaking, tapping, clanking, banging, scraping just to name a few.

How often do exhaust hood systems need cleaned?

A very popular question we get here at Hoods Unlimited is how often does my exhaust system need cleaned and who requires it?  Well, I suspect if you currently find yourself having to hurry and find a hood cleaner you know that either your fire marshal or insurance agent is requiring that your kitchen exhaust hood system needs cleaned.  Lets talk about these people and where they get their information.

When Hoods Unlimited receives a phone call from a customer whose hood is not working we usually work them through a few trouble shooting tips:

  • First and easiest thing to check is the breaker box to see if there is an electrical problem throwing the breaker.
  • Then next thing to check is the fan belt.
  • If either of these are not the problem, the fan motor may have died.

Why is a kitchen exhaust hood cleaning necessary?

Well next to your fire marshal expecting a professional kitchen exhaust hood cleaning, your insurance requires it, and NFPA96 codes and standards have written it.  The cooking process emits heavier than air oil particles into the air which a properly working kitchen exhaust hood then captures in its air current and discharges it into the outside atmosphere.  It is in this process that centripetal forces sling the greasy residue out of the air current onto the appurtenance surfaces every time the current changes directions.

Why is my kitchen hot? Smokey? fan not running?
Many times during a kitchen exhaust hood cleaning we find that a hood isn't doing it's job.  This will result in a hot, smokey kitchen and hood noises such as the humming of the fan has stopped.  The problem most often found upon inspection is a fan belt is broken.  Most fan belt manufactures of kitchen exhaust hood fan belts will recommend changing the belt every 6 months.  That is why all our service trucks carry most common belt sizes in order to fix damaged belts.

I've been cleaning hoods since 1996.  I've never been hurt... that is until June 2012.  I was doing a routine inspection when a simple misgrip on the ladder caused me to fall.  The fall was only about 10ft, but it was enough to badly break my heel and wrist.  I've never felt that kind of pain.  It's November now and I would say I'm 100% recovered, but it is more acurate to say that I'm 100% able to do everything I could do before the injury, but now I have to deal with pain in my foot everyday.

The Secret to Obtaining a Lower Price for your Hood Cleaning Service

Do you want to get the best price possible for your restaurant's hood cleaning service?  Of course you do.  Let me give you an insider tip from the perspective of a hood cleaning business owner (who happens also to be the best hood cleaner in the world;).  Open your mind to the possibility of releasing your door key to the hood cleaning company you choose to perform your services.  But don't just give it away freely.  Use the leverage of issuing a key in order for you to obtain a lower price.  You see, a hood cleaning service truck doesn't become profitable unless it can perform multiple (2 or 3) jobs in a daily/nightly route.  If you allow us to have your key, we can more easily become profitable- -therefore it is worth offering you a discount.  Not to mention it makes it easier to schedule last minute or impromptu services if ever an emergency situation arises on your end.  It is really a win win situation for both companies as long as you receive a certification of insurance from the hood cleaning company naming your business as additional insured.  And keep in mind; if the company you choose is seriously dedicated their business (such as ours, in business in Atlanta for over 10 years) they will covet a relationship with you in order to keep your keyed account.  And if they aren't a serious hood cleaning business you SERIOUSLY don't want to jeopardize your business by hiring them.  I've done a lot of manual labor in my day and I can say with complete sincerity that this work is rife with danger.  Please do not hire a new or fly by night company.  Always ask for their credentials.
